It’s okay to focus on your own goals to some extent. After all, you want to be successful in your business. But too much “Me! Me! Me!” will only turn your business network off and leave its members not only uninterested in you but also avoiding you.
You have to give to get. Show interest in helping others when it comes to business networking, and they will prove more interested in helping you.
Being Overly Opinionated
It’s okay to have an opinion. It’s even okay to share it. But if you’re beating your connections over the head with your opinions, you probably aren’t making many friends. And avoid controversial topics in conversation, or at least keep the chatter light. Few things make people’s blood boil more than discussions of politics and religion.
You have strong opinions? We all do. Share them with the friends and family members who already love you. Stick to less inflammatory topics for your business network.
If you forget to return your Aunt Jan’s call or stand your best friend up for coffee, forgiveness is pretty well assured. If you fail to follow through with members of your business network, however, they will be quick to lose trust and move on to someone they view as more reliable.
Why should they send referrals your way or purchase from you if you don’t live up to your word?
It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and bad-mouth other members of your network. And people will listen to what you have to say and even commiserate with you. The problem is bad-mouthing others gets some attention in the short term, but turns people off in the long run.
Ultimately, bad-mouthing makes you seem petty, vindictive, arrogant, an even childish. Take the high road.
