In today’s business world, you really can’t know too many people. Every connection has the potential to help you in some way. However, some business networking relationships will show less obvious benefits, at least at first, and there are a few types of connections you really must have.
The Know It All
You don’t have time to keep up with everything that’s happening in your industry. Believe it or not, however, there’s someone who does, and you want this person as one of your connections. The know it all stays up to date on the latest business news and trends and is only too happy to fill you in.
For example, you may make a connection with someone who knows all the latest about social media. When Facebook makes another change? You’ll know where to turn for insight.
The Resource Person
Have you ever spent hours trying to find something—a phone number, a website link, an address, or a supplier, and finally given up in frustration?
Having this person on your list can help you avoid all of that. This person prides herself on knowing where to find things, people, or information—quickly. If you get to know the resource person, she will be only too happy to help you find what you need, or at least, point you in the right direction.
This person is the social butterfly of business networking. He knows just about everyone. Even better, the socializer remembers all of their names and what they do. The socializer likes to connect the people he knows, and as such, will help you build your network.
When this person finds a product, service, or person she likes, she shouts praises from the rooftops—loudly and often. You want the cheerleader on your list and on your side because she will tell potential customers, partners, and sponsors about you. And when interesting opportunities arise? She’ll give you the scoop.
As always, it’s important to make daily efforts to build and nurture your business network. Every connection is important, but make sure you have some of the above people on your list.
